Industrial 2 of 5 (or Industrial 25) is a numeric-only, discrete barcode symbology developed in the 1960s by Computer Identics Corporation and later by Identicon Corporation. It encodes digits (0–9) using five bars per character, of which two are wide and three are narrow—hence the name "2 of 5".

Its simplicity makes it ideal for encoding numeric data in industrial and logistics applications, especially where readability and durability are more critical than data density.

  • Bars are separated by narrow spaces, and each space is the same width as a narrow bar.

The width of the left and right quiet zones must be at least 10 times the width of a narrow bar.

Check Digit Calculation Method for Industrial 2 of 5

Typically, Industrial 2 of 5 barcodes do not require a check digit, as it is a self-checking barcode. However, an optional Modulo 10 check digit can be used if needed.

1. Sum the digits in odd-numbered positions and multiply by 3:

(8 + 2 + 8 + 9) × 3 = 81

2. Sum the digits in even-numbered positions:

4. Find the remainder when divided by 10:

96 mod 10 = 6

5. Subtract the result from 10 to get the check digit (if the result is 10, use 0):

10 - 6 = 4
